The Issue

As Christians, we know that regardless of our outward appearance, inside we are sinners. Below our exteriors lies a heart in desperate need of God’s saving grace. In many ways, our city is very similar. St. Louis is a wonderful city in which to live, work, and play. Sadly though, there is a darkness, a depravity at work in our fair city, one hidden well below the surface, away from our eyes.

Did you know St. Louis is ranked as one of the top 20 human trafficking cities in the United States by the F.B.I.? The U.S. Department of State estimates as many as 300,000 American children are at risk for trafficking, and human trafficking is the second largest crime worldwide (U.S. Dept. of State). The tragedy is real, and it’s happening in our backyard.

Put Thy Tears in My Bottle

On March 11, Central is proud to host cellist Steuart Pincombe and his wife, soprano Michelle Pincombe. As part of their year-long U.S. tour, they will be performing “Put My Tears in Thy Bottle” to provoke awareness about human trafficking.

Quickly establishing himself as one of the leading early/new music performers of his generation, Steuart performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician in leading venues and festivals across Europe and North America.

Put My Tears in Thy Bottle is a carefully sculpted program of text and music that explores three perspectives on the current human trafficking situation: The Slave, The Industry, and Hope in Suffering. Pre-recorded audio tells this story as the music serves as a parallel narrative. The work has been commissioned by and designed for International Justice Mission (NL)’s “Expressions for Justice,” an organization seeking to create opportunities for artists to harness their artistic currency in the fight against human trafficking and other forms of violent oppression. Please note: due to the subject matter, the program is not suitable for very young children.

Central will be presenting this installment of the Concert Series in partnership with Crisis Aid International and other local organizations. After the performance, we will have a reception featuring the art and writings of some of the girls and women who have been rescued from trafficking situations.

Central was particularly blessed a couple weeks ago when their tour brought Steuart and Michelle through St. Louis on a Sunday morning!
