Service & Compassion
God has given each of us gifts and talents that, when used, seem almost magical in their power and beauty. At Central, we each seek to understand who God has made us to be, so that we can use our unique gifts, skills, and passions to glorify him by serving others. Every person is necessary. Every person is a gift. For, it takes the whole church to be Jesus’ hands and feet in the world.
There are a variety of ways to serve that fall into the categories of world missions, national missions, local missions, community partnerships, and ways to volunteer around Central.
Central Service & Volunteer Opportunities
There are many ways to get involved in Central's community by serving the congregation and our visitors through volunteering. By investing as little as one hour a month, you could richly bless others. Opportunities include:
- Coffee Ministry
- Visitors & assimilation
Local Ministries of Service and Compassion
.... I was hungry, thirsty, a stranger, sick and you visited... when you did it to least of these... you did it to me. (Matt. 25: 35-40) For the Lord…executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. So show your love for the alien. (Deuteronomy 10.17-19)
HARVEST is a ministry of Central Presbyterian Church, whose mission is to share the love of Christ to the international “harvest” God has brought to St Louis. We welcome new refugees to the south St Louis area and maintain these relationships, primarily through building gardens and providing fertile soil that grows vegetables and friendships. Harvest has built more than 60 backyard raised-bed gardens with refugees from Nepal and Burma, Afghanistan and Congo, over the past four years, and endeavors to reunite with these families during the non-gardening months, as well.
In addition to gardening, volunteers organize events throughout the year with refugee families. This includes VBS at the home of a HINDU family, Advent activities, and other family events to reach out to those with whom we have established relationships. They are invited to activities at Central Presbyterian Church, as well. We welcome volunteers who want to garden once or maintain long term relationships with local internationals.
Harvest partners with New City Fellowship for a monthly WORKDAY in south St Louis. At these workdays various churches in the St Louis area gather to do minor home repairs and/or garden with the refugees.
Central’s Life Team exists to glorify the Triune God by promoting a life-affirming biblical worldview in our church and community. As an official committee of the church, we’re joyful in our own being rescued in the gospel. In that joy of spiritual rescue, we strive to equip our church as grateful rescuers of those in imminent physical peril (e.g., embryos, unborn, elderly, infirm).
The Life Team does this through a wide series of events throughout the year. Recent efforts have included a series of testimonies and educational pieces on the many forms of adoption, participating in the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., hosting conferences, and much, more more.
