CASA - Voices for Children
“Children are abused and neglected in unimaginable ways in our city every day,“ notes Central member Stephanie Sachs. Stephanie is a City CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Voices for Children, an organization that trains community volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children in the city of St. Louis. Volunteers get to know the children they represent and speak up for the child’s best interest in court and in the communities where they live. The result, for most children, is less time in foster care and more time where all children should be - in a safe permanent home. Volunteers need to be at least 21 years old, but no experience is required. There are nearly six hundred children waiting for a volunteer to speak up for them.
“As a CASA, I may be the only person who has ever prayed by name for the children assigned to me, “ says Stephanie, “and I have seen those prayers answered. After advocating for four siblings, ages 1-6, through twenty-eight months in foster care, eight foster placements and failed attempts at reunification with their mother, I had the privilege of witnessing their adoption by two Christian families in May.”
