Wednesday, 4/21/21 at 7:00pm

About the Event

Mental health and wellness is a topic of importance for all of us, regardless of our backgrounds, circumstances, or age. It impacts how we think, feel, and act, and can determine how we perceive the world around us, and affect the choices we make. Mental health challenges encompass a wide range of topics affecting tens of millions of people each year. Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (46.6 million in 2017). Mental illnesses include many different conditions that vary in degree of severity, ranging from mild to moderate to severe.

Suicidality & Self-Harm

This spring, Central invites you to participate in a series of discussions on the issues of suicidality and self-harm. A team of local mental health and medical professionals will share the latest data, help us to identify key warning signs, dispel common myths, and help us to know how to care for those whose lives are affected by suicide. This course begins April 7, and continues each Wednesday evening in April. The classes will meet online via Zoom from 7 – 8 p.m.

Week 1

Session one focuses on awareness and normalizing language around these topics. Learn the general statistics, vulnerable populations/risk factors, some myths about these topics including talking about suicide in the context of Christianity.

Week 2

The second week's focus is on prevention: signs/manifestations of suicidality/ideations/self-harm and how to respond.

Week 3

In week three, we talk about how to care for those whose lives are affected by suicide.

Week 4

Q & A with the healthcare professionals

Self-Care: More Than a Buzzword

You might have heard about the idea of self-care, but what is it exactly?  More importantly, how does one practice it?  We will spend our first week discussing what self-care is and why it matters.  Our second week we will explore how self-care works and create an individual plan for self-care that we can use.  Join us May 5 & 12 for this interactive experience as we learn to take care of ourselves in order to better serve those around us. The classes will meet online via Zoom from 7 – 8 p.m.
